A Beautiful, Peaceful Place With a Long History...

The name is pronounced "YAH-hots" by residents. The peoples that occupied it since prehistoric times (until pioneers and explorers arrived) virtually died out from western diseases before ethnographers could come along to find out how it was actually pronounced and what the word really meant. The present pronunciation is largely a guess (or compromise) between what some of the surrounding tribes called it (or remember the original residents calling it). In the Chinook language "yahuts" means something like "dark waters at the foot of the mountain" - which is a fair description of the locale. Additionally, there is a sad history of these and other coastal tribes being gathered and imprisoned here (in temporary reservation) during the late mid 1800s. Perhaps that is part of the reason that it has the aura of sadness, respect, and peace of a sacred Native burial ground to a variety of peoples today.

Natural Wonders...

This tiny resort community of nearly 800 people, sheltering in the shadow of Cape Perpetua's basalt rock and crashing waves of the Pacific, hugs close to the water of both bay and ocean shore, surrounded by majestic forest  and coastal bramble. This is a favorite stretch of coastline for watching winter storms, exploring tide pools and beach combing. In the splendor of its surrounding natural beauty, Yachats opens a window to the environment. It is the ideal place for personal rediscovery, renewal, rest, recreation, and romance.

Abundant Natural Recreational Possibilities...

Yachats is in the center of the central Oregon coast and approximately half way between Florence and Newport. In either direction, you will find places for exploration and adventure. Cape Perpetua offers tide pools, blow holes, whale watching, mushroom hunting, nature guides, and miles of trails for hiking or biking. The city has made a strong commitment to creating and maintaining trails and walking paths in and around Yachats. There is a a continuous trail from the center of town all the way to the top of Cape Perpetua, safely located off the highway. Trails are under construction at the north end of town too, connecting Smelt Sands State Park to the 804 trail, the Gerdemann Botanical Preserve, and more trails on the east side of the highway. The tides and seasons cause the estuary to be constantly changing and somewhat unpredictable, which adds to the incredible visual interest of the area. A little further south on HWY 101 is Sea Lion Caves - America's largest sea cave - seasonal home to as many as 300 steller sea lions and untold other wildlife. Also available is a "Farm Tour" up the Yachats River Valley in August, which gives people a glimpse of a rural back road community, including a historic covered bridge about eight miles from town.ldlife.

Great People...

Local inhabitants are a independent bunch too. According to the most recent census, Yachats has the oldest and best-educated population (per capita) on the coast. While it is the physical beauty that initially attracts people to the area, ultimately it is the quality and diversity of the inhabitants that encourage many of them to stay and put down roots. It is a quirky and creative community like none other of its size on the whole Oregon coast. You can tell by some of the events they organize and celebrate, including festivals for classical, celtic music, kites, agates, mushrooms, and Art & Crafts faires, an annual fish fry, a car show, and a "La De Da" parade. These are people who take their fun seriously. Live music is available nearly every night at The Drift Inn. There are also a lot of interesting cultural events sponsored by the Yachats Academy of Arts & Sciences - which organizes speakers to talk on a variety of subjects, from Native American Art to Nanotechnology. It is a stimulating and unexpected treat to enliven a visit to Yachats. Info is available on GoYachats.com.

Dining and Accommodations...

Yachats has been overlooked by the big fast food chains and is much too small for national hotel franchises to bother with either. Locals and frequent visitors alike are happy to keep it that way, preserving the character and flavor of this unique place "quirky" and natural.
