If you’ve never walked between fifty foot walls of ferns, than you haven’t experienced a hike like Fern Canyon Trail. This short trek transports you through a cool moist canyon with fortress-like walls covered top to bottom in enchanting ferns. The trail starts just inland from a vacant stretch of Northern California coast, and then turns inland into the lush shady forest housing Fern Canyon. The hike can be done as a 1.1-mile lollipop loop with 150 feet of elevation gain, but it is most enjoyable as a one mile out and back with 75 feet of elevation gain. Turn around at the top of Fern Canyon and replay the most exciting portion of the hike.

Hike Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail

Hwy 101
Orick, CA 95555

This is one of the most popular trails in Redwood National Park. The staff at Kuchel Visitor Center often recommend it to visitors since it's short, level, and close to the visitor center. Unusually for a major redwood attraction, this trail is in a redwood upland environment at 1200 feet above sea level. Because of its elevation, the grove is often in the clouds and gets a lot more fog than the lowland groves. There's a lush ground-cover of ferns, but the understory is open and the trail's position high on a hillside affords some nice views of the forest. Rhododendrons are common and bloom in early June.

Located 25 miles north of Eureka California, Patrick's Point is a park located in the heart of California's coast redwood country. The park's dense forests of spruce, hemlock, pine, fir and red alder stretch over an ocean headland with lovely wildflower-festooned meadows. A dramatic shoreline ranging from broad sandy beaches to sheer cliffs that rise high above the Pacific Ocean offers great opportunities to explore tide pools, search for agates and driftwood, watch whales, sea lions and brilliant sunsets. The park offers several miles of hiking trails, a recreated Yurok Village, a native plant garden, visitor center, three family campgrounds, 2 group camps, a camp for hikers and bicyclists, and 3 group picnic areas.

Most people know Redwood as home to the tallest trees on Earth. But the parks also protect vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild riverways, and nearly 40 miles of pristine coastline, all supporting a rich mosaic of wildlife diversity and cultural traditions. Together, the National Park Service and California State Parks manage these lands for the inspiration, enjoyment, and education of all people.
