A City With Unique Things to Do

The Long and The Short...

Newport, incorporated in 1882 (though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868) is an historic city that caters to visitors of all ages and interests. Newport’s beginnings shaped two distinct areas of town, the Historical Bayfront, and Nye Beach. During the early 1900s, Nye Beach was the number one visitor attraction on the coast with hot sea baths, taffy stores, and agate shops to entertain visitors from the Willamette Valley. Nye Beach is still a very popular haven for the arts, with the Newport Performing Arts and Visual Arts Center amidst unique galleries, book stores, eateries, shopping and lodging.

The High Points...

North of town Yaquina Head is the site of Oregon’s tallest and second oldest active lighthouse. The 93-foot-tall structure was completed in 1872. The lighthouse is located at a natural area that was created by lava flow more than 14 million years ago.

The Midpoints...

The Bayfront was and is Newport’s economic backbone, housing a port for the commercial fishing and wood products industries. Today, it is still home to one of Oregon’s largest commercial fishing fleets. The Bayfront is a working waterfront on which visitors can enjoy shops, art galleries, chowder houses, restaurants, fish processing plants, and unique family attractions in turn-of-the-century storefronts from a bygone era.

And In the Briny Deep...

The South Beach District of Newport (over the big bridge, on the southern lip of Yaquina Bay) is home to: The Oregon Coast Aquarium, a fascinating and educational destination well worth the trip all on it's own; The Hatfield Marine Science Center, a great place to visit after you have visited the aquarium to see and learn about real science being done in the ocean and about our climate; And the Rogue Brewery (makers of Dead Guy Ale, and others), a mecca for finely crafted micro-brews like none other on the coast of Oregon - a must visit attraction for anyone who is a fan of great beer.

Dining and Accommodations...

There are so very many places provided to eat and stay (both national chains and local independents) in Newport that a complete listing would be very long indeed, and our recommendations are really only scratching the surface of what's there. However, we do have recommendations, which we do think are very special and deserve mentioning.
