A city known to give you a fun escape from every day routines and life, this college town has a lot to offer. The heart of the city is the Plaza, a parklike square with restaurants, shops and beautifully restored buildings surrounding it. Downtown also has the beginning of a trail that winds nearly 10 miles through and under the nearby forest canopy. The acres and acres of ferns and spectacular redwoods so close to an urban area, make it a wildlife habitat and recreational treasure.
In Arcata you'll see block after block of stunning Victorian homes, craftsman bungalows, and cottages lining the neighborhood streets with colorful gardens. The mild climate helps the gardeners create beauty in everyday publicly viewable spaces for everyone to enjoy. Springtime is a special treat, but it's beautiful all year long.
The nearby beaches are perfect places to play along the shore. Just 5 miles North of Arcata is the Mad River Beach, a bonfire friendly beach, making this a unique visitor destination. Arm loads of driftwood can be collected and burned which is something big city people rarely get to experience. Ocean temperatures can be cool, so always bring something warm to wear all during the year.
At over 2,000 acres and growing the Arcata Community Forest offers miles of mountain biking, hiking and jogging trails, a disc golf course and an incredible setting among soaring redwood trees and pristine freshwater streams. Go for a walk. You get a feeling when surrounded by huge trees that you don't get anywhere else.
There are many charming and inviting restaurants, cafes, bistros to find delicious coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner and more. From B&B’s to modern hotels (and everything in between) there are many choices in Arcata to find your rest after a busy fun day. And like everything else about this town, there is always something unique to be found.
